Celui-ci, qui succ\u00e8de aux contredanses, connait un succ\u00e8s si important qu&rsquo;on ne compte plus les chor\u00e9graphies diff\u00e9rentes (par centaines), ni les partitions (par milliers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Une des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences majeures, que cela soit sur l&rsquo;aspect chor\u00e9graphique ou dans sa structure musicale, est sans conteste le quadrille Fran\u00e7ais. Tout le monde, ou presque, le dansait dans les salons d&rsquo;Europe et outre-Atlantique. Si bien, qu&rsquo;\u00e9videmment chor\u00e9graphes et compositeurs ont aussi voulu laisser leurs signatures en cr\u00e9ant de multiples variations &#8211; pour notre plus grand plaisir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces quadrilles qui ont fait le bonheur (ou l&rsquo;ennui) de tant de petits et grands danseurs aux XIXe si\u00e8cle, sont aujourd&rsquo;hui assid\u00fbment recherch\u00e9s par les chercheurs et passionn\u00e9s de danse historique. Et parfois, nous tombons par hasard sur un quadrille chor\u00e9graphi\u00e9 dont nous n&rsquo;avions plus la trace, comme le 5th set of Scotch Quadrille de Joseph Binns Hart .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Le Scotch Quadrille \u00ab\u00a0surprise\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>J\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 ce quadrille en 2014, par hasard dans un recueil de partitions, pos\u00e9 sur un piano lors d\u2019un bal en Ecosse \u00e0 la Gosford House. La couverture semblait nous appeler \u00e0 l\u2019ouvrir&#8230; Et bien entendu, la curiosit\u00e9 l\u2019emporta. Apr\u00e8s quelques partitions d\u2019ensemble de valses d\u00e9dicac\u00e9es, je suis tomb\u00e9 sur un quadrille \u00e9cossais inconnu au bataillon, sans m\u00eame la mention d\u2019une date. Surtout, il pr\u00e9sentait quelque chose que je n&rsquo;avais pas encore vu : en plus d\u2019avoir une chor\u00e9graphie sp\u00e9cifique, il \u00e9tait \u00e9crit pour \u00ab piano forte ou harpe \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le fait qu\u2019une harpe soit propos\u00e9e pour jouer un quadrille m\u2019a tellement interpell\u00e9, que je me suis simplement dit que \u00e7a serait g\u00e9nial de danser ce quadrille au son de cet instrument. Un d\u00e9fi, que j\u2019ai mis quelques ann\u00e9es \u00e0 relever. Il fallait un ou une harpiste, mais je n\u2019en connaissais pas encore. Il \u00e9tait, semble-t-il perdu depuis, bien qu\u2019une trace de celui-ci se trouve dans l\u2019<em>Harmonicon<\/em> de 1825.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il est d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Lady McFarlane, dont je n\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 aucune information, et est compos\u00e9 de 5 figures structur\u00e9es exactement comme le Quadrille Fran\u00e7ais. Mais au fur et \u00e0 mesure que les ann\u00e9es 1820 avan\u00e7aient, les chor\u00e9graphies se simplifi\u00e8rent, ou, se r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e8rent d\u2019un quadrille \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Ceci est tr\u00e8s probablement d\u00fb fait que le public ne put tout simplement pas apprendre syst\u00e9matiquement de nouvelles chor\u00e9graphies et pr\u00e9f\u00e9ra danser des figures qu&rsquo;il connaissait d\u00e9j\u00e0. C&rsquo;est peut-\u00eatre pour cette raison que Hart mit moins d&rsquo;efforts dans ses derniers quadrilles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notons aussi que la plupart des \u00ab pas \u00bb utilis\u00e9s par Hart \u00e9taient des pas du quadrille fran\u00e7ais, mais dispos\u00e9es de nouvelle mani\u00e8re. Leur seule originalit\u00e9 est que les airs sont des airs \u00e9cossais traditionnels. Mais au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019aspect m\u00e9lodique, ce sont des quadrilles ordinaires qui n\u2019ont rien \u00ab d&rsquo;\u00e9cossais \u00bb identifiable, la structure musicale est celle du Quadrille Fran\u00e7ais, et, nous l&rsquo;avons dit, les chor\u00e9graphies propos\u00e9es sont des r\u00e9am\u00e9nagements des figures du quadrille Fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 tout, comme nous le rapporte le Morning Post du 23 juin 1821 dans ses actualit\u00e9s musicales, le Scotch Quadrille plait : <em>Les quadrilles \u00e9cossais tr\u00e8s admir\u00e9s de Hart, avec de nouvelles figures, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es par M. J. Chivers, c.1821<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Mais, tout le monde n\u2019y \u00e9tait pas favorable\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>On ne peut pas plaire \u00e0 tout le monde, comme le dit l\u2019adage\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En effet, le fameux ma\u00eetre de danse Thomas Wilson (1774-1854) avait une mauvaise opinion de ces quadrilles, il \u00e9crivit dans son <em>Dancer\u2019s monitor<\/em> (ou <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/musdi.197.0?st=gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Danciad<\/a>) de 1824 :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Il existe plusieurs sets de ce qu&rsquo;on appelle des \u00ab\u00a0Scotch Quadrilles\u00a0\u00bb, qui ne sont qu&rsquo;\u00e9cossais que de nom et \u00e0 l&rsquo;air, n&rsquo;ayant aucune autre caract\u00e9ristique nationale, \u00e9tant compos\u00e9s des figures du quadrille Fran\u00e7ais. Afin de permettre \u00e0 ceux qui connaissent la danse \u00e9cossaise, de juger dans quelle mesure ils ont droit \u00e0 l&rsquo;appellation de Scotch, le lecteur peut voir ici les figures du Cal\u00e9donians.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilson pr\u00e9sente ensuite les figures du Caledonians quadrille, ainsi que ses propres quadrilles \u00e9cossais avec des figures qu\u2019il jugeait plus \u00e9cossaises. Mais voil\u00e0, tous les quadrilles de Joseph Hart sont initialement cr\u00e9\u00e9s et faits pour piano forte, \u00e9tant lui-m\u00eame pianiste de premier ordre. Cependant apr\u00e8s quelques recherches, il s\u2019av\u00e8re qu\u2019une grande partie de ses quadrilles sont propos\u00e9s pour piano forte ou harpe, et beaucoup font mention de la fl\u00fbte dans certaines figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>D&rsquo;ailleurs, pourquoi la harpe ?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Outre le fait qu\u2019un piano ressemble \u00e0 une harpe horizontale \u00e0 cordes frapp\u00e9es et non pinc\u00e9es, la raison est bien plus pragmatique tout comme nous l\u2019expose cet article dans <em>The Athenaeum and Literary Chronicle<\/em> de 1829 :\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>This arrangement of Hart&rsquo;s popular Quadrilles must be singularly useful and acceptable; for in large evening parties, where more ladies are assembled than can be formed into sets for dancing, and as all our accomplished countrywomen can play the harp or piano-forte, (or both,) all may be employed to the advantage of all, a convenience and pleasure we have satisfactorily experienced. The arrangement is unusually well made for the respective instruments (particularly the harp); and we hope this work will be followed up by an extensive continuation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Cet arrangement des quadrilles populaires de Hart doit \u00eatre singuli\u00e8rement utile et acceptable ; car dans les grandes soir\u00e9es, o\u00f9 plus de dames sont assembl\u00e9es que ne peuvent \u00eatre form\u00e9s des quadrilles pour danser, et comme toutes nos compatriotes accomplies peuvent jouer de la harpe ou du piano-forte (ou des deux), tout peut \u00eatre employ\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;avantage de tous, une commodit\u00e9 et un plaisir que nous avons exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s de mani\u00e8re satisfaisante. L&rsquo;arrangement est exceptionnellement bien fait pour les instruments respectifs (en particulier la harpe) ; et nous esp\u00e9rons que ce travail sera suivi d&rsquo;une longue continuation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>En effet, les jeunes filles de \u00ab bonnes familles \u00bb recevaient une instruction musicale, et la harpe en tant qu\u2019instrument r\u00e9put\u00e9 \u00ab feminin \u00bb (dr\u00f4le d\u2019id\u00e9e), y avait bien entendu toute sa place. Car, lors des soir\u00e9es ou apr\u00e8s-midis regroupant alors plus de femmes que d\u2019hommes, il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas surprenant que l\u2019une d\u2019entre elles, ou plusieurs, se place derri\u00e8re le pupitre pour faire danser les invit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019un point de vu purement marketing, les partitions \u00e9tant \u00e9dit\u00e9es puis vendues, proposer 2 instruments diff\u00e9rents et bien entendu plus int\u00e9ressant. Apr\u00e8s \u00e9changes avec des harpistes professionnels (classiques et celtiques), nous avons convenu qui faudrait faire des am\u00e9nagements afin de pouvoir jouer cette partition avec les bons tempi sans ab\u00eemer la m\u00e9lodie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>Au final, nous avons conserv\u00e9 la m\u00e9lodie (bien entendu), fait quelques petits arrangements de la basse, et supprim\u00e9 les deuxi\u00e8mes voix qui n\u00e9cessitaient l\u2019ajout d\u2019un troisi\u00e8me bras&#8230; la harpe ne permettant pas physiquement certains encha\u00eenements possibles au piano&#8230; ou peut-\u00eatre par quelques virtuoses, ce qui n\u2019est &#8211; h\u00e9las &#8211; pas mon cas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derni\u00e8re difficult\u00e9, les alt\u00e9rations de notes&#8230; Les harpes de l\u2019\u00e9poque disposaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 de p\u00e9dales permettant d\u2019alt\u00e9rer les notes avec les pieds. Or, je joue sur une harpe \u00e0 leviers qui implique une action de la main pour changer la hauteur d\u2019une note. Cette contrainte m\u2019a forc\u00e9 \u00e0 modifier la ligne de basse lorsque le cas se pr\u00e9sentait (figure 1 et 3). Certes, pour \u00eatre absolument historique, il faudrait rejouer la partition sur une harpe \u00e0 p\u00e9dales du XIXe si\u00e8cle.
